The Chicago Academy for the Arts’ Media Arts Department publishes Germinate every spring. Comprised of creative writing, film, and animation, Germinate highlights exciting work of emerging and established artists in their respective disciplines. The journal provides a published platform for storytellers within and outside The Academy community.

Each edition will feature work from:

  1. Professionals working in the Media Arts

  2. Academy Alumni

  3. Writers, filmmakers, and animators in grades 6-12.

The journal is edited by the Academy Media Arts Department writing students.

Germinate accepts submissions year-round. The next edition of Germinate will be published June 2018. Deadline for submissions is January 8th.

Designated a National School of Distinction by the John F. Kennedy Center, The Academy offers students the opportunity to engage in a unique co-curricular program: rigorous, college-preparatory academic classes and professional-level arts training in the context of an unparalleled school culture. The Academy’s school day consists of six 45-minute periods followed by a three-plus hour immersion in a student's chosen arts department: Dance, Media Arts (filmmaking, animation, creative writing), Music, Musical Theatre, Theatre, and Visual Arts. At The Chicago Academy for the Arts, young artists master the skills necessary for academic success, critical thought, and creative expression.
